How to change NDIS providers (2026 guide)
You can change NDIS providers at any time. It's your choice. Check your service agreement for how much notice you need to give, tell your current provider in writing, then update your "my providers" with the NDIA so the new provider can be paid. Your plan and funding stay the same.
Last updated: October 2026. Facts checked against ndis.gov.au on 12 October 2026.
Step by step
- Read your service agreement. It should say how to end the agreement and how much notice to give. The NDIA says a good service agreement explains "how to end the service agreement" (ndis.gov.au: What is a service agreement).
- Find your new provider. Talk to your support coordinator if you have one, or search the NDIS provider finder. You can check a provider's registration on the NDIS Commission provider register.
- Agree a start date with the new provider before you finish with the old one, so you don't go without support.
- Give notice to your current provider in writing (email is fine). Keep a copy.
- Make a service agreement with your new provider. It's recommended for every provider, and it's required for specialist disability accommodation (SDA).
- Update your "my providers". If your funding is NDIA-managed or plan-managed, you must record a "my provider" for some supports, including supported independent living (SIL), SDA, home and living supports, behaviour supports, plan management, support coordination and recovery coaching. Otherwise claims are automatically rejected (ndis.gov.au: What a my provider is).
- Tell your plan manager if you have one, so they pay the right provider.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a reason to change providers?
No. Choice and control is a core part of the NDIS. You don't have to explain why.
Will changing providers affect my funding?
No. Your plan and funding don't change when you change providers.
How much notice do I have to give?
Check your service agreement. The notice period is whatever you and your provider agreed in it.
What if I don't have a written service agreement?
Written agreements are only mandatory for SDA. If you don't have one, tell your provider in writing that you're ending the service and the date, and ask them to confirm.
Why was my new provider's claim rejected?
For some supports, including SIL and support coordination, the provider must be recorded as your "my provider". If they aren't, the NDIA rejects the claim.
My SIL provider isn't registered. What do I do?
From 1 October 2026, SIL must come from a provider that is registered or applied to register before that date. The NDIA says it will help you understand your options and find a new provider if needed.
Can I complain about my old provider?
Yes. You can raise it with the provider first, or make a complaint to the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.
Can a support coordinator help me change?
Yes, if you have support coordination funding. They can help you find providers and arrange the handover.
